Sport in autistic children.

Parents sometimes wonder what sport is best for a child with ASD. If your child is willing to participate in a sport that is not on this list and you will fit into your schedule, in your economy, let him try. Profits are, in varying degrees, in all sports, and if you like, will record and be happier.

Since autism seriously affects social and motor skills, sports most practiced team (football, basketball , handball) can be difficult for a child with an ASD and may be better to opt for an individual sport or a sport that is practiced in groups where interaction but not as intense and demanding. But this is a general idea:

Among the most popular sports for children with ASD

  • Swimming. Swimming is probably the number one sport for children with autism. Many enjoy the sensation of the pool, the movements in the water, diving … also allowed to participate in a team where each swimmer competes individually, so you can learn to be part of a group without feeling the burden of difficulties communication or integration strategy team.
  • Cross Country. It requires less communication skills that most sports equipment and a boy who runs well, even uncommunicative, is valued as an important member of the team.
  • Riding. It is not uncommon that many children with autism find it easier to communicate with animals than with others and some children with ASD have excellent results as jockeys.
  • Bowling. It may be due to the predictability of the plays: strips twice and feel or movement of the bowling ball falling or sliding down the track
  • Cycling..Like many sports we are describing you can practice alone or in groups and competitively or just to enjoy it. It may take a bit longer to learn, but not particularly skillful you can enjoy the bike as any other child.
  • Hiking. For many people with ASD, peace and silence of nature free from stress. Hiking, which can be an individual or group activity, it is an easy way to exercise and enjoy the countryside or in the mountains without the pressure of intense media impose.
  • Martial Arts. Martial arts combine elements of predictability and clear rules with the challenge of physical interaction with others. For many children with autism, martial arts help develop physical skills (balance, strength) at the same time improving psychological characteristics (self-esteem, discipline).

Great university initiative

Physical activity, sports and sports service degree at the University of Alicante, Miguel Hernandez University of Elche and the University of Valencia organized a Goalball championship. This is a new project, a coordinated sportive experience among the three already mentioned institutions.
The main goal was to create two teams (masculine and feminine) with students from the different universities and compete on 28th of March in Valencia against the other associated universities in this project.
You may ask, Who could be part of the team? The answer is any university student with or without a sight problem. Each team will be equipped by a maximum of 6 people, 3 players and 3 reserves; and at least, one person must have sight disability.
The less important thing was the result, thought the University of Alicante was the winner of the tournament with an outstanding initiative in stressing the inclusive sport.

Esther Vergeer unbeaten Since 2003, Wheelchair Champ Retires in 2013

Esther Vergeer did not simply go out on top. She went out after a decade of soaring out of other players’ reach.

Vergeer, a Dutch wheelchair tennis juggernaut, announced her retirement at 31 on Tuesday in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

She retires with an active win streak in singles of 470 matches, her last loss coming a little more than 10 years ago, in January 2003. Vergeer lost only 18 sets during the streak, and she won more than a third of her sets by the score of 6-0. She had 95 6-0, 6-0 victories in her career.

“I’m hugely proud of my performances, my titles and can look back on my career with a great feeling,” Vergeer said. “Keeping going would not add anything.”

Her final tournament was the London Paralympics in September. She captured the gold medal with typical ease, winning 7 of 12 sets in the singles competition by the score of 6-0. It was her fourth Paralympic gold medal in singles, to go along with her 21 Grand Slam singles titles. Although she was not as dominant when sharing the court with a partner, Vergeer also found success in doubles, winning 3 Paralympic gold medals and 23 Grand Slam titles.

Vergeer became paraplegic after spinal surgery at 8. Her first forays into wheelchair sports were in basketball, but she picked up tennis at 12 and decided to focus on it in 1998. By 1999, Vergeer had reached the No. 1 ranking.

Vergeer spent 668 weeks at No. 1, including every week from Oc
